On April 20, 2022, on a JetBlue flight from San Francisco to Florida, Tyson repeatedly punched a male passenger who was harassing him, including throwing water on Tyson; he did not face criminal charges.

Rachael A. Carmen et al. in the Review of General Psychology posit that Tyson’s face tattoo may be an example of “body ornamentation as a form of intimidation”. Charlie Connell and Edmund Sullivan in Inked describe it as having become “instantly iconic”, while Vice’s Mitchell Sunderland ranks it as one of the two things Tyson is best known for, alongside biting off part of Evander Holyfield’s ear. Marie Hadley, in A History of Intellectual Property in 50 Objects, writes that the tattoo “has been described as one of the most distinctive tattoos in North America”. Its stature has increased over time, aided by Tyson and the 2009 comedy The Hangover, in which it is prominent on Tyson, who is in the lightweight division boxing appears as a fictionalized version of himself. The tattoo has become strongly associated with Tyson and has made his persona more distinctive.

Last month it was announced that Paul, a Youtuber-turned-boxer with ten professional fights to his name, would be taking on former unified world champion Tyson in a boxing match at the AT&T Arena in Texas.
It is four years since his appeared for an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr, and it was a surprise therefore when the announcement came that Tyson would be fighting Paul in July, by which point he will be 58, at the 80,000-capacity AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The Paul vs. Tyson news was met with a collective groan from the combat sports community, forcing “The Problem Child” to defend himself (and the booking) on social media. Their heavyweight contest is expected to be an exhibition bout, but that hasn’t stopped opportunistic bookies from laying odds on the mid-summer showdown.
The victory made it a clean sweep for Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions, which was squaring off with rival U.K. promoter Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing in a unique 5 vs. 5 team concept created by Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority.
The 3-hour Tyson-Jones event took place with no audience and was universally well received by the press, with the New York Times declaring that, “these fights actually look great,” and commenting on the “surprisingly good production value.” CBS Sports wrote that, “the show itself, from start to finish, was surprisingly entertaining throughout.” The fight was noted on social media for the commentary provided by rapper Snoop Dogg.
Apart from the belated release from the Chinese boxing authorities and the promotional companies’ fiasco, Zhang’s peak years were also squandered because of visa troubles as a Chinese citizen which led to the cancellation of several bouts. While he stuck outside the U.S., his form dropped as he could not train as he usually did.
In 2019, a year before the official closure of Roc Nation’s boxing division, the Lane brothers negotiated Zhang’s release with Matchroom Boxing USA, which Duva, again, had cut a deal with. In 2024, Zhang’s co-manager recalled his promoter tried to stop him leaving by intimidation, dragging him into legal battles and refusing to line him up in fights. Brothers Tommy and Terry Lane, sons of boxing referee Mills Lane, joined Zhang as advisers and helped guide him out of trouble. It was not clear whether this incident was referring to Zhang’s termination of contract in November 2014 or in 2019.
Referencing this controversial incident, Jake Paul shared an Instagram story where he was spotted with a fake ear in his mouth. Paul also trolled Tyson by replicating his famous face tattoo, making him one of the most recognisable athletes around the world.
“It’s crazy to think that in my second pro fight, I went viral for knocking out Nate Robinson on Mike Tyson’s undercard. Now, less than four years later, I’m stepping up to face Tyson myself to see if I have what it takes to beat one of boxing’s most notorious fighters and biggest icons,” said Paul.
On July 30, 2004, Tyson had a match against British boxer Danny Williams in another comeback fight, and this time, staged in Louisville, Kentucky. Tyson dominated the opening two rounds. The third round was even, with Williams getting in some clean blows and also a few illegal ones, for which he was penalized. In the fourth round, Tyson was unexpectedly knocked out. After the fight, it was revealed that Tyson was trying to fight on one leg, having torn a ligament in his other knee in the first round. This was Tyson’s fifth career defeat. He underwent surgery for the ligament four days after the fight. His manager, Shelly Finkel, claimed that Tyson was unable to throw significant right-hand punches since he had a knee injury.
